Toni Matičevski officially opened Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia for 2016. The Melbourne based fashion designer is one of Australia's finest, with the likes of Beyoncé and Leighton Meester wearing his signature dramatic lines. He is known for his sculptural pieces, volume, textures and balancing the past with the future through his designs.

Possibly more eye-catching than the garments were the accessories. Ryan Storer created a collection of accessories, including a necklace come handcuffs, not to mention the crystals some models had in their mouths!

According to a press statement from Matičevski in reference to the Resort 17 'girl' he said: "Unapologetically sexy, she knows that the distorted, even sinister darkness within yields the most powerful kind of clarity. Suspended and weightless in a world of cosmic, untold layers, she causes an undeniable ripple in the delicately woven matrix around her,"

According to Jo Bayley, Fashion Editor, The Culture Concept Circle, for her, it was all about the colour and the fabrics. "Gorgeous gowns, perfectly fitted pants, provocative bustiers and beautifully cut pencil skirts were all on show." She loved the colour palette, especially the yolky yellows and powered blues mixed with Gothic black laser cut cloth.

The Misha Collection was also a show stopper this year, with the stunning Bella Hadid opening and closing the show.

Hadid has been named the face of Australian brand Misha Collection's resort '17 campaign and newest line, Misha Gold.

"Bella was always my number one choice," Misha Collection's creative director Michelle Aznavorian told Vogue, "She's just got such a timeless, elegant and a very high fashion look. We're getting everything manufactured in Australia and we're using all Italian, German and Japanese fabrics so we wanted to collaborate with a beautiful face."

Georgia Power from Melbourne and Georgette said: "The brand is known for its beautiful feminine cuts and chic styles to suit any woman. We have been a long-time fan and have loved seeing it grow into an international phenomenon – worn and stocked by the Kardashians and Hadid clan as well as many other celebrities."

Georgia continued by saying that "The collection was full of delicate lace, feminine corseted silhouettes, detailed sequins and an attitude that screamed 'don't mess with me I'm a freakin queen'. The finale was a mass of strikingly beautiful women walking with pride and elegance down the runway, led by the gorgeous Hadid."

West Australian label ZHIVAGO (meaning "daring" in Russian), co-designed by Lydia Tsvetnenko and Lara Kovacevich, took to the runway on the second night of MBFWA with their show resort collection.

Their show was inspired by the 90's movie "Death Becomes Her". According to The A.M. Edit's Alexandra Marie, "Elements of the film shine through in the collection's designs. The pieces in the collection that were not black were in sharp and daring hues – deep blood reds and purples, startling electric blues, and glistening golds. Every design was either sequinned, or boasted a bold architectural construction. The attention to detail in Zhivago's work to incorporate the film into the show is phenomenal, down to the models' strong, vampish makeup, and their strung faces and hair appearing as though seen through a shattered mirror."

According to Sarah Swift of Miro Door and Georgia Power from Melbourne and Georgette, the collection unleashed a parade of statement sparkles, daring cut-outs and a spectrum of metallic. Sequins were a staple of the collection, and were married with fluid and sleek silhouettes. All of the collection was seen as bold and eccentric and characteristic of the duo's signature style.
